In the past year or two the new miracle drink is the smoothie. There seems to be a smoothie to help with any problem you might have. The variety is overwhelming. You can get them in the grocery stores, at juice bars, at ice cream parlors, in hotels, and almost any place else you can go. The main point that I wish to make first and foremost is to read the label or ask how many grams of sugar are in the smoothie. The amount of sugar can sometimes deplete the whole purpose of drinking the smoothie in the first place.
Also, be familiar with the ingredients and what they can do to help you. You will find that the smoothies you make at home are often much healthier than those you can buy, even in the health food stores. It is so easy to make a large container of a special smoothie and then divide it into 3 or 4 servings and then freeze them. This way you will have enough to get you through most of the week. They are at the right consistency in the morning if you take them out of the freezer at night and place them into the refrigerator. Just stir in the morning and add a straw and you are set to go.
If you are interested in losing weight, there are certain ingredients that are more helpful than other. The trick in losing weight is to add more fiber to your diet. Flax seed is great because it has both soluble and insoluble fiber. The ground variety works best in smoothies. You don’t even taste it. Plus it also contains omega-3 fatty acids. Other high fiber foods are berries, kiwi, pears, and greens. Also add some protein (such as greek yogurt–watch the sugar content!) and you have the perfect smoothie for a snack, a workout drink, or breakfast.
If you are over 30, you need to start thinking about your bone health. There are certain ingredients that you can put into a smoothie to strengthen your bones. I like to use almond milk, but make sure you get the one with the lowest sugar content. Leafy greens are especially good. You can use those already frozen if you are out of the fresh. Personally, I find that the fresh have a better taste. Fruits that are good are berries, kiwi, and bananas for both calcium and magnesium. Almonds and chia seeds are also good additions.
There are a lot of smoothies for clear skin. Actually, any detox smoothie will remove the toxins from the body and help improve the skin. So instead of buying all those expensive creams, try a skin improving smoothie. There are some ingredients that you will want to make sure are included. Avocados are great for hydrating the skin. Pineapples are full of Vitamin C which helps build collagen. Mangoes are full of carotenoids which help your skin glow. Spinach and kale help remove toxins from the body. If you have ever had problems with kidney stones, spinach should be avoided. Coconut water is another hydrator for the skin. Add flax oil if your skin is very dry.
