As mentioned in a previous article on using healthy oils it was mentioned that by just doing your own baking you are being healthy. Unhealthy oils are usually brought into the home by packaged baked goods such as cookies, cakes, and other baked treats.
But we can bake even better by using the healthy oils or substituting the oils with other substances. You can try replacing the oil or butter used in baking with several different types of fruits. Save those bananas that are over ripe and no longer good for eating and mash them up and use that for an oil or butter substitute. The bananas are not only a good substitute but they also are an added source of potassium.
Another great substitute would be apple sauce. You can use store bought apple sauce or better yet use your own homemade apple sauce. Homemade applesauce is easy to make and is so much more delicious that the store bought. A lot of families like to visit the apple orchards in the fall and pick enough apples to make apple sauce to last all winter long. This is not only a great family outing, but a healthy alternative to the apple sauce bought in the stores. You have more control over the amount of sugar added in the applesauce. This is really easy to make in the pressure cooker.
The third fruit substitute will be prunes, specifically prune puree. You could make this yourself by just zapping some prunes in a food processor or you can find the puree in the grocery store. If you get the prune puree in the store just check out the sugar content. Some have such a high sugar content that will make you second guess if you want to use it. Also, it is suggested that you don’t start off with doing a full substitution the first time you use them. It is best to use half prune puree and half oil or butter to see if anyone in your household has a reaction to them. Usually there is no adverse reaction, but some people seem to be more sensitive than others. Don’t let this deter you from using prunes as they are considered one of the healthiest foods you can consume. They are high in antioxidants which help to control free radicasl in the body that can lead to cancer and heart disease.
