Oatmeal for Kids

hot oatmeal

With school in full swing and the cold weather starting, we want to send our kiddos off with a healthy breakfast so their mind will be sharp.  Well, we all know one of the healthiest breakfast they can have is a warm bowl of oatmeal.  But there is that age old problem of them just not liking it.

The problem is solved!  This recipe is not only healthier than the oatmeal our Mom’s gave us that was loaded with brown sugar, but it is tastier.  The big kid in all of us will make it become one of our favorites also.  The secret ingredient–peanut butter! Of course, if someone is allergic to peanut butter, almond butter can be substituted (if there isn’t a problem).

The other secret is to make it in a slow cooker.  Mix everything together just before going to bed and put in the slow cooker.  When you wake up in the morning–it is ready to eat.  I like to use one of the electric slow cookers that will switch to warm when the meal is ready.  One that I would recommend is the Instant Pot 6-in-1.

Instant Pot 6-in-1 Pressure Cooker, Programmable

Can you believe it–a way to wake up to a warm, healthy, delicious and satisfying meal! It’s like having your own personal chief.

  • bananas1 cup steel oats
  • 1 cup mashed bananas
  • 1/4 cup peanut butter
  • 2 cups milk
  • 2 cups water
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 Tablespoon honey
  • 1/2 teaspoon Nutmeg
  • Salt

  1. peanutsSpray the inside of the slow cooker with a spray butter.
  2. Add all ingredients into the slow cooker and mix together.

Cook on low for 8 hours.

Top with sliced bananas and nuts.

Earlier in the day—Mix all ingredients in a bowl and refrigerate.  Just before going to bed, place mixture in sow cooker.

Use freshly grated nutmeg.

I prefer steel oats because they are hearty and will take a longer time to digest than the other types of oatmeal,  hence you won’t get hungry until lunch.

If there is any leftover,  it can be frozen or refrigerated for short term use.
