As we all know, the biggest unhealthy threat for all of us, young and old, is the amount of hidden sugar in our food and drinks. I read one estimate that the amount of hidden sugar now found in our food has increased 10,000% since the 1970’s. One major way to get healthier is to cook your own meals.
The first healthy time saver is related to pasta sauce. It is so easy to just open a can or jar and get great tasting pasta. Well the secret in the “great tasting” is all the sugar. Just start reading the labels. Most have as the second or third ingredient high fructose corn syrup. If you continue reading you will find other sugar such as sucrose, corn syrup, and sugar. So make your own pasta sauce at home using top quality ingredients and freeze in a muffin tin. You will then have the exact amount you need for a quick meal. You can add meat or vegetables to the sauce and serve over pasta. You can make a meal for one or a whole family quickly.
The second healthy time saver is about making multiple meals at the same time. If you read the blog on pressure cooker canning, I talked about making seven beef stew meals at one time. Well, that same concept can apply to many meals you make. When making lasagna, manicotti, or enchiladas. I know it is so easy to pick those readymade trays in the freezer department at your grocery store, but again, read the labels. You will be shocked at the sugar and salt in these meals. And if they contain meat—what kind of meat is it? I hate to take a guess. Make 3 or 4 trays at the same time and then put them in the freezer. The main work is in getting all the ingredients together. Once that is done, enlist the help of your family in forming an assembly line to produce 4 meals all at once. Wouldn’t you love to have that stashed away in the freezer for one of those times you are in a hurry and get home late! I know I would.
