Frittatas for Breakfast, Brunch, Lunch, or Dinner

eggsThis is probably the most versatile meal you could ever cook.  First of all, it can be served as a meal at any time of the day.  Second, you can vary the ingredients in it to include your favorite vegetables, meats, and cheeses.  There are thousands of recipes on line of different variations.  There are also various ways of preparing it.  The purpose of this article is just to introduce you to the frittata and discuss the different ways of preparing it.  Your creativity and imagination will be your guide to what to include in the ingredients when preparing this delicious one pot meal.

Basically, a frittata is an egg dish with vegetables, meats, and/or cheeses.  It is sometimes referred to as a crust less quiche.  It is started on top of the stove in a sauté pan and then can be finished one of three different ways.  It can be finished by baking it in the oven.  This gives it a creamy texture.  It can also be finished by putting some grated cheese on top and putting it under the broiler for about 3 minutes to give it a crusty topping.  The last and easiest way is to lower the heat and just put the lid on top until the eggs are thoroughly cooked.

frittataThe first step in making a frittata is to decide on the ingredients to be used.  Usually there are several vegetables that combine well together, such as spinach and mushrooms or spinach and potatoes.  The choice is up to you.  Then decide on the meat to be added.  Precooked bacon or ham or prosciutto  all make delicious additions. Lastly, you can use one type of cheese or you can use a mixture of cheeses.

Secondly, the average ratio of eggs to milk would be 6 eggs to 1/3 cup milk (or cream).  Mix eggs and milk together with a whisk.

Now the fun begins.  Add 2 tablespoons of olive oil or butter into the pan and heat.  Then add vegetables in the cooking time order.  If you are adding potatoes, they should probably be added first and cut very thinly, later add the faster cooking vegetables, such as onion and spinach. Add salt to the vegetables.   After vegetables are cooked until they are soft—about 10 to 12 minutes—pour in the egg mixture.  Gently stir eggs with a spatula while they begin to cook. Add meat into frittata and then add grated cheese.  Don’t overcook the eggs as they will finish cooking in the oven, broiler, or on top of the stove.

You could make several of these, one being vegetarian and be able to satisfy any one you wish to invite to your home for a meal.  They can also be served at room temperature and be left out as people come and go.  Some people like to drizzle a little olive oil on top and sprinkle with some more cheese.  This is outstanding served with breakfast bread.
